EGO - knowldege sheet

Knowledge Sheet 128 - Ego
Nov 20, 1997
Bangalore Ashram, India

When is there Ego?

1. When you don't get attention.

2. When you seem to be losing attention.

3. When you get attention (Laughter).

Ego causes heaviness, discomfort. It doesn't let love flow. Ego can be transcended by knowing the Truth; by enquiring "Who am I?" Often, your attitude towards one who has ego is of contempt or jealousy. But rather you should have compassion, or even pity, isn't it?

There is also a positive aspect of ego. It drives one to do some work. A person will do a job either out of compassion or out of ego. Most of the work in the society is by boosting the ego. But in Satsang, work is done out of love. Ego is separateness; non-belongingness. It is wanting to prove and to possess.

And when you wake up and see, there is nothing to be proved and nothing to possess, ego dissolves.

Sutras

Gossip
Most of the sorrow in the world is because of this: speech -- what
people say. If they kept their lips tight, ninety percent of the problems
in the world would be over.

Floating Shells
Don't see people as "lives", see people as floating shells in an ocean
 of life

Something Sacred
When you consider something sacred, you will never pollute it.

Look into the Vastness
Our head is stuck inside a drum, and we think that is the sky. It is so
little, our universe. Take your head; lift up---look into that
 vastness of the creation.

Perfection in Nature
There is perfection in Nature. You only have to look through a
 different eye

One Life
You think there are two people existing in this world. You think there
are two lives. In fact, it is wrong -- there is only one Life and one
 Self, one Soul.

Filled with Honey
Like a honeycomb is all filled with honey, the body -- -all the holes
in the body are filled with mind, or consciousness. And the nature of
 that is joy is Love.

Body is Space
See, ninety percent of this body is only space, and space, and space.
And what is in this space? That is mind; that is consciousness; that is
 intelligence.

Superficial Trust
Our trust is very superficial. It's just a covering for our fears. We
are afraid and we don't want to feel that way, so we force the trust on
us. We think we have trusted, and when the time comes it falls apart

Can't be Tired
When you appreciate beauty, you don't feel tired. You are energetic.
You are full of vitality, full of enthusiasm.

Levels of Appreciation
Just the sound of a bell, that is enough to appreciate. But if your
energy is low, you need really loud rock and roll to just make you feel
 good, high.

Useless
Beauty has no utility, because beauty is not a "means," it is an end in
itself. All that is useful in life is only a means. All that is
useless, is an end in itself. Do you see that? What is the use of being in
 love?

When We Sing
In every little mind, different, different thoughts come; and
different, different moods are there. But, when we sing, what happens? All the
minds have the same rythym, the same song, same waves, same frequency,
and there is so much more joy.

You aren't judged…
Do not judge. Just look at yourself -- how many flaws you have. And
Nature, the Divine, has accepted you with all your flaws... It doesn't
 judge you at all.

Stop Judging
Go inside -- go into the kingdom of heaven. And how can you go? You can
go only when you become innocent. And how can you be innocent? Stop
 judging.

Divinity And Beauty
There is no Divinity without beauty; there simply cannot [be]. Divinity
is nothing but energy, divine energy, and [the] expression of beauty.

Past or Future
Observe your mind---it's either in the past or in the future. Do you
see that? We regret the past and are anxious about the future.

'Judgement Day'
This whole thing of a "judgement day" is just to create fear in people.
There is no judgement day. Yes, in the past, prophets have used these
words only to stimulate those who do [would] not stir up for anything
other than fear. What do you do with people who are totally lazy, don't
do a thing, and sleep all the time -- such deep inertia? To stir
 inertia, fear is essential.

What you are judging
Your own judgement brings the barrier, separates you, makes you behave
so funny. When you are judging, you are judging your own self, but you
are super-imposing it on this, or this, or this, or this, or this.

Unconditional love
The breath moves into a saint as well as into a wicked person. The
breath makes no distinction, it moves. Unconditionally it loves you,
supports you, holds you in its arms, because it is all Shiva. The entire
creation is "Shiva tatwa" -- innocence.

Compassion or Forgiveness
Compassion is better than forgiveness. The very word "forgiveness"
implies that there is an intention in somebody's mistake. Somebody is bad
so you are going to "forgive" them. Peep into their heart. Go beyond
their words, beyond their behavior---you will see, they need compassion,
 they need help.

Gossip
Most of the sorrow in the world is because of this: speech -- what people say. If they kept their lips tight, ninety percent of the problems in the world would be over.

Floating Shells
Don't see people as "lives", see people as floating shells in an ocean of life

Something Sacred
When you consider something sacred, you will never pollute it.

Look into the Vastness
Our head is stuck inside a drum, and we think that is the sky. It is so little, our universe. Take your head; lift up---look into that vastness of the creation.

Losing Innocence
Your judgement is an impression in your mind. You don't want to be
judged, but you judge others. But whatever you do, if you judge, that
same reflects back into yourself, and the innocence is lost. The main
purpose, the main thing of why you should not judge [is] because your
 innocence will be lost.

  Constructive Criticism
If criticism comes from the heart, mixed with feelings, that's where
the bitterness is. That makes you feel bitter and spreads poison around
you. But if the criticism is just from the throat, not from the heart,
then it helps one to go ahead -- it becomes constructive.

  Criticism from the Throat
Without being critical, the intellect cannot progress. But that
criticism should not come from the heart; it can come from the throat.

  At least do this
This could be a step for you: to reach the point where you even don't
feel anything bad about anybody at all. But if you happen to feel
[bad], if you want to say [something], just say it -- and just drop it.

When You are Angry
When you are angry at somebody, for their mistake, you have become that
 person.

Nature Knows Best
See how many desires you have had, and how many desires were not
fulfilled, and how many desires you feel that way: when it was not fulfilled,
it was good, "It was best for me." Don't you see this? Some desires
which were not fulfilled, it was good for you. So, Nature knows what is
 best for you

Be Passionate for the Highest
If you are passionate, be passionate for the highest, the most
wonderful, the most beautiful. Be passionate for this entire
 creation-everything is so beautiful

See love even where it isn't
Even if people don't like or love you, from your side you consider that
they do love you, so that your love, at least, gets protected.
Otherwise, when you think somebody doesn't love you, then you will also stop
 loving them.

NEWS + ON RESPECT : GURUJI

AOL News: Say 'no to suicide' says Sri Sri

Say 'no to suicide' says Sri Sri
30 Oct 2007, 0135 hrs IST,Ramu Bhagwat,TNN

YAVATMAL: "I want a gurudakshina from you. Take a pledge to banish the very
thought of suicide. None of you should commit suicide or let anyone else do
that. Resolve to face the crisis with the help of spirituality. Share your
joys and grief with others. Use the power of prayer to tide over the trying
times."

This was the message Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravishankar gave to a
large gathering of distressed farmers at Bodhbodan village, 12 km from here,
in cotton belt's epicentre. The village had attained notoriety for the
highest number of suicides. There was virtually a stampede as
over-enthusiastic villagers crowded to greet guruji. Hundreds thronged to
have a glimpse of guruji and hear his soothing words that worked as balm on
their frayed nerves.

"We have survived much more hard times in the past. We have faced severe
droughts, natural calamities, plagues and oppression during British era.
Never did suicide figure as a solution. There is no reason why it should
now. Pray along with your hardwork and you will get inner strength to come
out of the crisis," said guruji.

"Take up natural, zero-budget farming. Grow alternative crops. If you are
reaping only losses in cotton cultivation, grow groundnut or vegetables
which fetch you more income," he told farmers.

On Respect .....

Read what Guruji says.. On Respect..

Question: What do you do if people don't respect you?

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar: Thank them. They have given you freedom. (Laughter
and amazement) When people respect you, they often take away your
freedom. They expect you to smile at them, recognize them, behave in a
certain way with them.

If they don't respect you, you are not obliged to answer their
questions
and you can drop all the formalities. Either you will be naturally
smiling or frowning. So you will be complete.

When people love and respect you, you are obliged to return their
courtesies because you don't want to hurt them. When they don't
respect
or love you, they will not be hurt by your actions and expressions. So
they set you free.

When you gain respect, you often do it at the cost of your freedom.
Wisdom is to put the freedom first and not bother about respect.

Q: Will freedom not bring arrogance?

A: True freedom is not an "I don't care" attitude. It is
lightness from
within, a genuine smile and not stiffness.

When someone is stiff and arrogant, they are not really free. True love
blossoms only in such freedom.

And when there is genuine love, respect simply follows you.

KNOWLEDGE - How to deal with behaviour + Window shutters + News + Balance sheet of life.

How to deal with behaviour....Guruji says

What do you do when someone behaves very rudely to you?

1. Get upset
2. React rudely back
3. Get frustrated
4. Run-away from and avoid the person or the situation
5. Blame the person
6. Preach to the person
None of these will in any way strengthen you.

Then what are the options? See rude behavior in this light:

1. It indicates the intensity of their commitment
2. It indicates the amount of stress and insensitivity
3. It projects the up-bringing of the person
4. It indicates a behavioral pattern
5. It shows lack of knowledge
6. It shows lack of observation of one's own mind and its sensations
7. It shows you behavior to avoid
8. It is an opportunity for you to welcome and absorb the rudeness
9. It strengthens your mind
10. It unconditions the love that you are

The next time when someone is rude to you, make sure you don't get
upset. Just give back a broad smile.

If you can digest the rudeness, nothing whatsoever can shake you.

Window Shutters....

To the degree that you are awake, everything around you brings you
knowledge. If you are not awake, then even the most precious knowledge
does not make any sense.

(Suddenly there was much noise from outside and Kiran went to shut the
window.)

Sri Sri: Awareness depends upon your ability to shut your windows. When
there is a storm you need to shut your windows, otherwise you will get
wet.

When it is hot and suffocating inside, you need to open your windows.
Your senses are like the windows. When you have the ability to open and
shut your windows at your will then you are free and you are awake. When
your windows cannot be shut or opened, you are bound.

Attending to that is sadhana or practice.

Sin & Spirit ( the six distortions of love) - HH Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

JGD ALL,

Now if you miss any of my emails.. you can read all this info from me on http://gurujiskripa.blogspot.com

SEND ME SOME PICTURES OF GURUJI GUYS.

Sin & Spirit ( the six distortions of love)
------------ --------- --------- --------- --------- -------
By : H H Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Now usually what we do is we go from one imperfection to another imperfection. If someone is greedy, you are angry about their greediness. "Well, that person is greedy, why that person is greedy?" but you are not less than that. You are not bringing the purity in you but you are changing the flavor of impurity. Are you getting what I am saying? Change of distortion does not bring perfection. But normally, everybody does this, they just change the distortion. Lust becomes anger, anger becomes jealousy or greed or arrogance or delusion. We are just moving from one imperfection to another imperfection in that case. Is that clear? At all costs, save the mind and how we deal with that mind, is to see that every action is happening according to some laws. So when you look into different actions, you find imperfections but done let those imperfections enter into your heart, your Being. (You become angry.) You know, most of the people who fight for rights, human rights, feminine rights...you are fighting for rights but inside you, you are all messed up, you are angry, then your anger is no better than lust, its worse than lust. Jealousy is worse than anger, its not better than anger. All these imperfections, six imperfections, you think one is better than the other? Its not, do you see what I am saying? And sadhana is to maintain that and not to be shaken by small little events, another event here, and another event there.

If someone scolds you or scorns you or their speech is imperfect, don't see that their feelings are also imperfect. Don't see intention behind other people's mistakes, you see what I am saying? When you see intention behind other people's mistakes, then the mind is reeling again in more impurity. Replacing one impurity by another impurity does not make anything pure or better, it makes it worse. Does it make sense?

So that's why Vikara, Vikara means distortions. ..Prakriti and Vikruti, the whole creation is made up of nature and distortion of nature. Anger is not our nature; it is distortion of our nature. Jealousy is not our nature, it is distortion of our nature. Why we call these as impure, you know? Why anger, jealousy, greed, lust are impure, why? They are all there in nature, isn't it? You tease a dog, how angry it gets. You tease a child, how angry it becomes. Lust is there in nature. Everything is coming out of lust. Everyone is born out of lust. Desires are there... this is a part of creation. But why do we call it distortion, why are they called impure? Why?

Because they do not allow the Self to shine forth. Sin is that which does not bring the spirit within to shine forth fully. Are you getting it? Anything you do, if it dampens the Self to shine forth, dampens the sincerity that we talked about yesterday, the Nature of Self to shine forth, then that we call sin. Sin is not in your nature, you are not born out of sin. Sin is just the wrinkles in the cloth. It needs proper ironing, straightening it all out.

Why lust is a sin? You know why lust is a sin? Because in lust, you do not consider the other person as life, you do not honour the life. You use them as an object, you make them an object of your enjoyment, so you are somewhere overshadowing or not looking at the Self in the other person. This is the only reason why lust is impure. Love is the reverse of lust. In love, you see the other person as Divine. In love, you surrender, you see the other as higher. To elevate the matter to the level of the spirit. An idol you worship, it is a stone, it is a matter, but when you are worshipping it, it has become no more just an idol, statue or a picture, it has become the living Reality. You have given life to it. You elevate it to the level of God, love, moving towards perfection.

Q and A's with Guruji (24th OCT 2007)

*24th Oct 2007 **Bangalore** Ashram*

*Questions and answers:*

* *

*Question:* Guruji, during the Navratri you asked us to drop all the
worries, disappointments, fear, insecurity etc, and all the negativities, in
the fire of the Yagna (Homa). I did that and felt free for quite sometime.
But after a while the worries started its work again, and I was back to the
square one!! Guruji, is there a method that these negativities disappear
permanently?

*Guruji: *(Laughter) Till you get Vairagya (dispassion), till the mind dies
you have continue. That's why it is said, 'punah punah'(again and again).
That's why Meera said, 'Baar baar bali jayu'. Again and again.. What happens
is that the mind gets trapped! Therefore unless you find the ultimate
contentment you have to do it again and again. And once you learn the skill
then you remain unperturbed. Serenity becomes your nature. Even now if you
look back and see yourself, you will se you have improved so much since the
time you have been practicing pranayama, yoga and meditation. You will see
you are so much better than before. I tell you once a person has learnt to
swim, he can never forget to swim. Even he has not done so over a long time,
he will still know. Similarly with practice, the mind learns to recognize
what to let go. So when there is an event, the mind naturally, effortlessly
says, "oh this I can let go"!!

*Question:* Guruji, in our childhood we heard that there is someone named
'Chitragupta' who is talking note of all our actions and is responsible for
counting our karma balances. Is that true? Is there really someone who is
watching us every moment?

*Guruji:* (laughter) 'Chitra' means photo, picture and 'Gupta' means secret,
hidden. The self who is witnessing the actions, the conscious mind is
referred here to as Chitragupta. You know there is this saying which says,
'Under the foot-print of an elephant, all other marks dissolve'. Therefore
under the Guru when are doing your Sadhana and seva and Satsang then
everything else dissolves. Similarly Chitragupta is not the (Malik)God, he
is the (Sevak) servant. But I tell you without self knowledge everything is
false!!

*Question:* Guruji, Hanuman was the biggest devotee to the Lord Rama, why is
it that we don't get to see Him any more?

Guruji: You don't get to see Him any more because He has settled in your
heart!! And he wants you to look into your heart. Whatever fear of Lanka you
have in your mind he wants you to get rid of it, and He is making the tail
and the fire ready to burn it!! When the atmarupi Ram( referring to Sri Rama
as the self) wants to meet the maanrupi Sita(referring to Sita as the mind),
then devotion (referring to Hanuman) should take over to burn fear(referring
to Lanka) by destroying Rvana(Ego) with the help of Laxmana(awareness). In
such a place, Victory is confirmed!!! And that day becomes the Dashere and
Diwali. So there is a Dashera and a Diwali happening everday in our life!!
(laughter!!)

*Question:* Guruji, this body of our feels like such a burden at times. We
suffer several diseases and it becomes an obstacle for us to merge with the
Ultimate. Guruji, can you please explain how important it is to keep the
body?

*Guruji:* You know there is a saying that the grass is always greener on the
other side. There are thousands of souls who want to take a body to enjoy
whatever you are enjoying right now! These souls are want to get a body,
they are waiting!! Only fools leave the body, I tell you!! Only fools commit
suicide! You have so many impressions from the last birth!! You must have
been a donkey, cow, bull, buffalo,(laughter) anything!! You keep carrying
the impressions and behave in a particular way!! You have tendencies!!

*Question:* Guruji, You said at the Navratri the we see only 0.003% of what
is actually happening. Can you please talk on that?

*Guruji:* You know there was this scientist named Mickel kako who
established a theory, after having done several experiments and research,
that there are parallel worlds. It is he who said that, what we see is only
0.003% of what is actually happening. What we cannot see is the 'Dark
Energy'. That's what he named it. The power of that 'Dark Energy' is
unlimited! Its immense! In fact our Rig-Veda also says the same thing. The
'Dark' is referred to here as the 'Tamas'. Even Rig-Veda says that this
'Tamas' has great power. That's why they say 'Kali'. The dark goddess. She
just do not symbolize destruction, she is also referred to as the epitome of
knowledge. Like the pupil of our eye is dark! It is because of that we can
see. Do you see what I am saying?  He source of knowledge is the 'Kaali'…

Your Expressions of Love - Knowledge sheet 127

Knowledge Sheet 127 - Your Expressions of Love
Nov 13, 1997
Jaipur, Rajasthan, India

You feel a lot of love for someone and they do not take it. What do you do?

1. Get frustrated

2. Turn the love into hatred and wish for revenge

3. Again and again remind them how much you love them and how little they love you

4. Become fussy and cranky

5. Throw tantrums

6. Feel humiliated and try to protect your respect

7. Resolve never to love again

8. Feel hurt and mistreated

9. Try to be aloof and indifferent

...and you have seen that none of these work. They only make the situation worse. What is the way out of this? How do you maintain your lovingness?

1. Have patience and change your expression of love.

2. Be centered and limit your expression of love. Sometimes over-expression of love puts people off.

3. Take it for granted that they love you too and accept their style of expression. For example, a mother with three kids. One child talks, one child does not talk, one child throws tantrums. Mother's love is the same irrespective of their behavior.

4. Genuinely acknowledge their love for you. This will turn your demand into gratefulness and the more you are grateful in life, the more love comes your way.

5. Know that hurt is part of love and take responsibility for it. When you move away from your center, you will definitely get hurt and the nature of worldliness is misery.

namaste + God is a thorough businessman + Sincereity and blessings = Knowledge.

Why do we do Namaste?

Indians greet each other with namaste. The two palms are placed together in front of the chest and the head bows whilst saying the word namaste. This greeting is for all people younger than us, of our own age, those older than friends, even strangers and us.

There are five forms of formal traditional greeting enjoined in the shaastras of which namaskaram is one. This is understood as prostration but it actually refers to paying homage as we do today when we greet each other with a namaste.

Namaste could be just a casual or formal greeting, a cultural convention or an act of worship. However there is much more to it than meets the eye. In Sanskrit namah + te = namaste. It means -I bow to you -my greetings, salutations or prostration to you. Namaha can also be literally interpreted as "na ma" (not mine). It has a spiritual significance of negating or reducing one's ego in the presence of another. The real meeting between people is the meeting of their minds. When we greet another, we do so with namaste, which means, "may our minds meet," indicated by the folded palms placed before the chest. The bowing down of the head is a gracious form of extending friendship in love and humility.

The spiritual meaning is even deeper. The life force, the divinity, the Self or the Lord in me is the same in all. Recognizing this oneness with the meeting of the palms, we salute with head bowed the Divinity in the person we meet. That is why sometimes, we close our eyes as we do namaste to a revered person or the Lord - as if to look within.

The gesture is often accompanied by words like "Ram Ram", "Jai Shri Krishna", "Namo Narayana", "Jai Siya Ram", "Om Shanti" etc -indicating the recognition of this divinity.

When we know this significance, our greeting does not remain just a superficial gesture or word but paves the way for a deeper communion with another in an atmosphere of love and respect. .....

God is a Thorough Businessman

The Divine has given you all the small pleasures in the world, but has kept the bliss to Himself. To get the highest bliss you have to go to Him and Him alone.

Don't be too smart with the Divine and try to fool Him. Most of your prayers and rituals are just attempts to trick the Divine. You try to give the least and get the maximum out of the Divine and He knows. He's an astute businessman; He will trick you even more. If you go underneath the carpet, He will go underneath the floor.

Be sincere in your attempts. Do not try to outsmart the Divine.

Once you get the bliss, then everything else is joyful.

Without the bliss, joy in anything in the world will not stay.

~ ~ Gurudev - H.H.Sri Sri

Sincerity and Blessings……..

Many ask for blessings but only a few will receive it. Why?

A: The giver is anyway giving but the taker is not there - the sincerity is missing. One who gives blessings gives it freely but the one who receives it has to be sincere. Sincerity is the qualification to receive blessings. And everyone is free to be sincere at any point of time or space.

Q: Why do people choose to be sincere only sometimes?

A: Because of the illusion that they are going to miss some mundane pleasure. Hankering after pleasure makes them insincere. When you are sincere you simply enjoy pleasure.

Poor people fight for food.

Rich people share their food.

Richer are those people who share power.
Richer still are those who share fame.

Richest are those who share themselves.

Richness of a person is indicated by his ability to share and not by what he hoards. Godliness is enjoying sharing fame.

"Sincerity is being in touch with your Depth."

Time

Time and the Mind

When you are unhappy, the mind contracts, and time appears to be too long.

When you are happy, the mind expands, and time appears to be too short.

When the mind is in equanimity, it transcends time.

When the mind id dull or unconscious, it is unable to experience itself.

When you feel time is too short, you are either restless or in expanded awareness.

When you feel time is too long, you are miserable or keen minded.

When you are happy and love what are you doing, you simply don't feel the time.

Also, in sleep you don't feel the time.

In deep meditation, you have a feeling that you are time and everything is happening in you.

Events are happening in you like the clouds come and go and go in the sky.

When you are ahead of time, It is dragging and boring.

When time is ahead of you, then you are surprised and shocked. You cannot digest the events.

Time and Samadhi

When you are with time, you are wise and at peace.

When the time is good, a foe will behave like a friend.

When the time is not good, even a friend will behave like a foe.

An ignorant person disbelieves in time and the Divine beyond time.

The wise neither believe nor disbelieve the individual. His faith rests on kaala (time).

The wiser one believes in mahakaala (grand time or Shiva).

In the world and in time there is always room for improvement. You can improve your time and your nature.

Only the Being is perfect all the time. Take refuge in the Being and become incorrigible.

Just like the mind experiences time, this moment has a mind of its own, A Big Mind which has enormous and infinite organizing power.

Thought is nothing but a ripple in this moment,  and thus a few moments of Samadhi gives the mind a lot of energy.

Samadhi, no-mindedness or timelessness, is peace, the Real peace. This is the greatest healer.

Before you fall asleep or as soon as you wake up, in the moments of twilight of Consciousness, experience the timelessness.

Time is the greatest mystery. In its lap exists all other mysteries
